Brisbane based dubtronic group, Dubmarine have confirmed that they are working on a follow up to their 2010 ”Depth of Sound” release.
When asked recently about the rumour, Frontman, D-Kazman confirmed they were close to completing the album.
He says the new album will better showcase the group’s live vibe as they move towards a more electronic/digital sound.
But while we wait, they’ve released an animated video clip for ”Point The Bone” which sees a giant squid like creature trashing a city and battling it out against a robot which has come to stop it.
I’m sure there’s a metaphor in here somewhere.
Brisbane based band, The Medics are getting closer to the release their debut album “Foundations” and are currently on a national tour around Australia.
“Griffin” is the third single released off “Foundations” and the video clip was filmed at Brisbane’s historic Boggo Road Jail.
It’s a thought provoking and confronting clip at times as the song is based, in part, on a real event. (I can’t tell you which parts are fiction and which parts are real)
If in Australia - check local guides for tour details and the boys will play their surrogate home of Brisbane on April 21st.
Brisbane/Rockhampton based Busby Marou have been quite busy in 2012 and have just released a new deluxe version of their debut self-titled album which comes with a great cover of the Lemonheads “If I Could Talk I’d Tell You”.
Thomas (Busby), Jeremy (Marou) and band have just finished a short US-Canadian tour, performed at SXSW in Texas and the Aussie BBQ in LA.
The group was voted in the Top 5 “Like A Version” favourites of 2011 (for their cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun) and also made it into triple j’s Hottest 100 (Number 81).
I love Jeremy’s break out solos on whatever instrument is used in the core of the song and with Tom’s vocals, they just seem to have the perfect balance between them.
Looking forward to what happens next.
Aboriginal Country Artist, Troy Cassar-Daley has just released his 8th studio album and there is a noticable change in the sound to his latest album.
Raised in Grafton in Northern New South Wales, Troy has been very busy touring, working on this album “Home” as well as releasing his live DVD and CD package “Troy Cassar-Daley Live”.
His latest single, “Live and Learn” was inspired by his wife Laurel (also a country musician turned tv and radio presenter) and his two children Clay and Gem. The video was filmed on the streets of Brisbane as well as in the Old Museum, which is becoming a hot spot for local musicians again.
What is most immediate about this album compared to his last offering I Love This Place is the very American country sound. An obvious sign that Troy is trying to crack the U.S market like his good friend, Keith Urban.
No doubt recording in Nashville (as well as spending sometime songwriting there last year) and working with a band which has backed both George Jones and Alan Jackson has rubbed off a little on this latest offering.
The solid songwriting from Troy is still there and this album doesn’t disappoint. For me the stand outs are The River Runs (about the Queensland floods last year and which directly affect the Cassar-Daley family home) and Tall Dark Ringer (about the Aboriginal Stockmen of Far North Queensland - think Quinkan country).
I look forward to hearing the stories behind the rest of the songs on this 13 track album.
CULTURAL WARNING: NAMES OF DECEASED PEOPLE CONTAINED IN THIS POST
Melbourne group, The Yung Warriors, have released a new single called “Hold On”.
It’s dedicated to their late grandfather and famous Aboriginal artist, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri.
They’ll be supporting US Hip Hop group, D12 from February 3 during the Victorian leg of their tour.
For too long the Australian Indigenous Hip Hop scene has been dominated by the blokes with the exception of Nay from The Last Kinection, Ebony Williams, Jaqueline Extreme, MCS and emerging Brisvegas MC, Kayemtee.
But now comes Sky’High, who recently signed to local label Elefant Traks.
“Your Highness” EP has just been released ahead of her debut album which is due to drop in May 2012.
The EP is effectively a five track sampler but if the album is anything like this, prepared to be blown away.
Sky’High (aka Skh’ai Gerrey) grew up in housing commission around Ultimo and Maroubra in Sydney and is of Aboriginal, Scottish and Fijian descent.
Her Grandmother was an original Go Go dancer in Sydney’s Kings Cross while her mum ran strip clubs and pubs.
In 2011, she was voted “Best Female MC” at the Ozhiphop Awards and her raw aggression is sure to get the attention of the masses.
The album is being handled by NZ producer, P-Money and she’ll be supporting the Herd and Thundamentals on tour from March 30.
Stand out favourites for me are “Don Dada”,”Let’sJust”and”HoodieandNikes”.
After making the move last year from Cairns in Far North Queensland to the bright lights of Brisbane, The Medics just keep getting better.
The band has just released the video for their second single, “Joseph” which was filmed at the Old Museum in Brisbane, The Queensland Music Awards, and Bigsound earlier this year.
It’s a reworked version of a song which was first recorded in 2008 and contained a piano intro/riff and glockenpsiel.
After the keyboardist left the group (a while back), the new version is more guitar driven and sans glockenspiel.
The new video was filmed at the Old Museum in Brisvegas, The Queensland Music Awards and Bigsound earlier in the year and it’s a great clip.
Next stop before the end of the year is the Woodfood Folk Festival where they’ll perform on the 27th, 28th and 31st of December.
Oka have always been a band which has flown largely under the radar in Australia despite spending their time touring overseas festivals.
Their new album “Milk & Honey” was released in September and continues the progressive roots vibe which has kept festival crowds pulsing since the group’s formation.
Love the laid back sound of “Gorilla Villa” which shows that Oka are more than capable of writing a great vocal tune as well as instrumentals.
Oka are currently touring here in Oz and you can catch them at:
Nov 25 - The Joynt (Brisbane)
Nov 27 - Mullum Music Festival (Mullumbimby)
Dec 16 - Coolum Civic Centre (Sunshine Coast)
Dec 29 - Dec 31st Woodford Folk Festival
Jan 27 - Winchfest (Taranaki, NZ)
Gurrumul Goes Triple Platinum
As if 2011 couldn’t get any bigger, news comes that Gurrumul’s self-titled album has gone triple platinum.
To reach ARIA platinum status, an artist needs to sell more than 70,000 units and for an Indigenous Australian musician to do so, is huge!
Gurrumul has just finished a successful European tour which concluded with a performance for the Queen while she was in Australia.
Next up for Gurrumul is the ARIA Awards on November 27 which will be shown on digital channel, Go.
Brisvegas hip hop artist, Impossible Odds has delivered a killer debut album.
“Against All Odds” is the much anticipated follow up to his (aka Fred Leone aka Rival MC aka Impossible Odds) very popular self titled EP.
I love the sampling on this track and the guest vocals from RnB powerhouse Georgia Corowa brings the right balance to what is a great first single.
